I really liked Judge Dredd, though I kinda wish Rob Schneider's character had died horribly and graphically the first chance he had. As I do with all Rob Schneider characters. Actually, we were talking about this throughout the movie: how the hell did he become famous? OK well I just wiki'd it, and it was SNL (durrrr), like all those other shit comedy actors. SHOULDA KNOWD

People ask me what I did for my 21st birthday, and well, here is what I did. I guess maybe watching movies and drinking crap beer with kidz then talking with my mom later and worrying a bunch doesn’t amount to a great story, but it was a good night with friends I don’t see often enough. So thanks, guys!

Regarding Frank’s commentary on American beer being good once (a quite uncharacteristic statement for a Brit): it seems that the culprit was actually partly Prohibition and partly World War II! I know right? Greatest generation my eye! Basically, Prohibition came to a close not long before rationing started, but America just had to get its booze on, barley or no. The rationing more or less ensured that only major corporate brewing operations could survive, thus guaranteeing their dominance on the market for years to come.

So: the big corporations went The American (manufacturing) Way, which is to replace as many ingredients as possible with corn, because the only thing more economical than corn is slavery, and slaves don’t ferment well. The beer was awful but super cheap, and at the end of the day, that’s all that really matters.

The moar you know

(Note that the “today” in the comic is August 6, when the comic was drawn, not actually today.)

I’ve been reading the Botany of Desire recently and was reading about how much hard cider (One thing he talks about extensively is the apple) was produced here til (Cider was so abundant, puritans even made it an exception to their no fun or alcohol rule), and about how johnny appleseed planted apples specifically for cider (His apples were nasty any other way, good ones can only be grafted). Apparently a lot of his apple orchards and such were destroyed during prohibition. That makes me sad because now there is a lack of cider here, good or bad. sigh. fuck prohibition.

I’m so glad that was Johnny Appleseed’s real agenda.

Also I want that book and I want some cider.

Only cider to be found in the states is located in Boston. It’s give and take on that one.
