#19: A Problem With Retainers
Wednesday, 10 September 2008

Another problem is that they hurt like crazy. Not like braces, though. Most kids in my town who had braces went to this one orthodontist who’d put you on the thirteen-year plan of glacial-speed teeth shifting and prolonged wallet-milking. I had braces, but I didn’t go to that guy. I went to an out-of-town orthodontist, the speed demon of dental reshaping, who took less than a year to do what would have taken the other guy at least six. The only problem with this method was that the moderate pain of six years of braces was compressed down into as many months of high-concentrate hurt. The pain would keep me up all night every time I went to see him. I was elated to get them off, but my jaw was broken shortly afterwards and my teeth got all messed up again! GOOD TIMES, YES

Sometimes I worry that in doing this personal journal comic I’ll use up all of my inane personal stories, and then I’ll have nothing to chit-chat about with people because they’ll say, “oh yeah, I saw that on your website” and I’ll say, “shoot, I was afraid that would happen”, and they’ll say, “yeah, I saw that too”.

OK so you may notice that the individual comics pages now have “transcribe this comic” buttons! This is because I’ve hooked Foolish Creatures! up to Ryan North’s Oh No Robot comic search engine. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the system, here’s how it works, more or less: you or I can transcribe these comics and the transcripts will be added to a searchable database (once I approve them). This way, if you wanted to find that one comic where I go on and on about rolodexes and iconography, you can just search for “rolodex” and “iconography” either on my Oh No Robot search page or in the “Search Transcripts” box on the sidebar (once the comic’s been transcribed)! I’m going to start going through my comics and transcribing them myself, but I’d love to have your help! Thanks!

8 long years down the drain, never to be reclaimed. Damned braces.

Anyway, Dan and Scroob released an official video for Letter from God:

Dunno if you read BB at all or not so hope this is fresh for you, it’s so damn cute.

Also I’m watching the Discovery channel as I type this and they are talking about the LHC, but more importantly they played that rap I commented about before.

Also today I ate some yogert.

Anything else you want to know about my day? No? Well I’m off to delve the depths of depravity then.

I’ve considered getting braces/a retainer, but I highly suspect I can’t afford that anyhow.

There are always things to talk about. (At least I think so.)

I’ll help transcribe some (though I can’t guarantee I’ll do it very consistently).

I’ve never thought of a retainer/braces as something you decide to get for yourself. They’ve always seemed to be something that gets inflicted upon you by maniacal parents.

Frank: I saw the video before, but I was happy to watch it again, it is crazy adorable. Also, I hadn’t seen the BBTV interview, which was neat.

I ate some yogurt today too! I do want to know more about your day, every day! (MAKE JOURNAL COMIX ALSO)

Renee: If you don’t really really need braces, I doubt that they’re worth it.

I agree there are always things to talk about, but my mind has a wonderful way of not finding those things, especially around people I don’t know too well…I guess sometimes it’s easier to have a set of items/stories on hand to break ice with. A friend of mine who is much more socially adept than I said that it’s more important to make whoever you’re talking to comfortable. Once that happens, the conversation will just flow, and it doesn’t matter as much what you’re talking about, something I haven’t entirely wrapped my mind around yet.

And thanks for your help with the transcriptions! No consistency required!

    Nate: Or…SOCIETAL NORMS?!
