So those two comics are Brandon Graham’s King City (Tokyopop) and James Stokoe’s Wonton Soup (Oni Press), both black-and-white manga-format completely crazy amazing comics. Both of these guys are brilliant and dedicated artists who are serious about comics, and I really recommend their work.

King City is largely about an unassuming guy named Joe who happens to be a cat master: he carries his cat Earthling around in a bucket and gives it injections to unleash its awesome cat powers. Very funny and strangely poignant. Also it is stuffed with puns (yes!). Also also, a crossword puzzle! And a maze!

Wonton Soup is, like the cover says, “a space trucker cooking opera”. Protagonist Johnny Boyo is a young master chef who leaves culinary school behind to go space trucking. Features crazy aliens and extremely dangerous cooking.

These guys are extremely inventive and refreshing and you should read their stuff, etc. The guy at the comic shop had never heard of them, but he ordered them for me, and when I came by to pick them up the next week, he’d read both of ‘em and had already ordered more copies. Spreadin’ the word, word.

Also, here are some turtles and a guy I drew today.

Well, Brandon finished King City 2 but the publisher Tokyopop (which has been having issues lately) apparently borked the actual publishing end of it, so he was putting it online for a while. But he’s taken that down, so it looks like it’ll be printed at some point. The specifics are fuzzy though.
