#50: Write What You Know
Thursday, 23 October 2008

This is a constant problem. It’s hard to motivate yourself to create when you have no idea what you’re doing and you know most of the stuff you make early on is going to be embarrassing down the line. Even when you think positively about the “big picture” of eventually being good at what you’re doing, you still have to motivate yourself to do the best you can right now on this crap thing that’s going to suck. Because if you don’t, you’ll never actually get good at it.

It was right around this comic that I recalled that people sometimes do this thing with watercolor where they wet the paper before applying paint to it so that they can achieve a smoother and more blended wash. As it turns out this is a really basic watercolor technique, but that’s what I get for not actually taking classes or reading books or seeking advice on the subject. I have since obtained a nice book on watercolor, and I hope to do some learnin’. Book learnins.
