But! Massachusetts decriminalized marijuana, Michigan made it legal for medical purposes, Missouri mandated utilities produce clean energy, and several anti-abortion measures got shut down.
So, in summary: re: ballot measures, not a good day for gay marriage, good for other things.
Also, Florida voted against a symbolic gesture to remove a ban on Asians owning property (which is unenforceable regardless, because of the equal protection clause).
And, in the Senate, Alaska failed to vote against Stevens, who is up by 2,000 votes (which, in Alaska, is 1.5%) despite him trailing in the polls by 20 points. Must be a reverse Bradley effect. In Minnesota, Norm Coleman leads Al Franken by only 300 votes! Holy shit!
Yeah, the amount of Jesus money spent supporting Prop 8 was insane…from the Mormons, of all people. You’d think they’d be slightly more open to a, uh, non-standard sort of marriage, considering the church’s origins—except that nowadays they excommunicate anyone who practices polygamy. (Also, according to the LDS, homosexuality is not sinful in and of itself, but is instead a kind of gateway drug to sinfulness…it’s a step away from “God hates fags”, but not a step in any direction I’m interested in heading.)
And wow, I didn’t realize the Coleman/Franken race was that tight…
