#67: Their Crazy Stories
Friday, 14 November 2008

Okay, next week will be a little bit different. Instead of the regular comics on index cards, I’ll be putting up a series of drawings on index cards of places I’ve been or people I’ve seen recently—all drawn from life. I hit a comicking dry spell, so I’ve been drawing like mad until I can get back into my comic groove. Most of those haven’t been on index cards1 or colored, but some have, and so those’ll go up here with a bit of commentary. Regular comics will resume the following Monday (the 24th).

Have a good weekend!

A friend and I actually had a conversation that was vaguely like to that sort.  She was talking about how her guyfriends (who were more nerdy than she was) had girlfriends and yet neither of us have dated all that much.  So if it is any comfort, you’re not the only one (and we’re female, which supposedly means we don’t have to try to get dates, which is actually a load of crap).  I don’t think I am willing to reveal much more than that right now.

I love the last panel- the expression of realization is spot on.

    Crazy sex lives? Yeah right!!!
Any crazy stories I have about that stuff comes from the point at which I completely and totally lost it. Which, granted, lasted a while, but yeah. Most of the time though it seems like were talking more about the our crazy lack of sex lives… with a few exceptions. Alden for example, never has a lack of sex life. I think thats partially because he goes to Sarah Lawrence. Which would also explain why his sex stories would be completely nuts.
    Girls dig nerds.

I think I envy being able to tell crazy stories more than I envy having to live through them. It’s like all the writers say, to write an interesting story, you have to be a huge immense dick to your characters. Misery sells!

That’s why I could never write fiction.  I couldn’t be mean to the characters and make them go through stuff.

I guess empathy can sometimes be a bad thing for a writer to have? Most “I could never write fiction” reasons I’ve heard have to do with exposing oneself. I suppose you could do a Chris Ware and write yourself into all of your characters and just imagine bad things happening to you

I can’t be that masochistic!  I’d be miserable all the time.  I could do some decent autobiographical work though.  There’s a good amount of interesting mess ups there.  I’d just have to deal with people thinking I’m really self absorbed (well then I probably am).  But then those kinds of comics are starting to be come some of my favorites because they’re so interesting.  Anyway.
